The below photo is a view of 5th Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn in 1924, just a block away from where Mary and Peter lived at 45 4th Street. The photo is looking toward Citizens Manufactured Gas Plant along Gowanus Canal.
The house located at 45 4th Street has since been demolished, but according to the below Sanborn map from 1915 the building they lived in was a four family brick building, and was located just a block from the Gowanus Canal and its surrounding industrial areas. Mary’s death certificate classified the “character” of the building as a “tenement.”
Sanborn map from 1915 showing 45 4th Street highlighted in yellow.
