Historical Documents

Henry Van Manen married Anne Murray who immigrated from Ireland sometime before 1855. They had four children and lived in Brooklyn’s 22nd Ward. Henry was a carpenter, according to 1855 and 1865 census records.

Henry died of cholera in 1866. New York City had a well-documented outbreak of cholera in 1866 that took the lives of 1,137 people. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, sharing Lot 9895 and Grave 458 with Bridget Neiman, Elizabeth Murray, Margaret Murray, and Annie Van Manen. Bridget Neiman was the sister of Anne Murray. Elizabeth Murray was the mother of Anne and Bridget Murray. Margaret Murray and Annie Van Manen were both infants when they died. Anne Murray died in 1895 and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Flatbush, Brooklyn.

Greenwood Cemetery provided vital records (biographical information), a grave map, and a picture of the original lot book showing who was buried at this location.
